MANHOLE COVER COASTERS: VENICE

from $4.00

The Queen of the Adriatic is an impossible city. Born as a refuge from invaders such as the Huns and Lombards, Venice was formed from the swampland of the Veneto region in Northeastern Italy. The sea is both the protector and nemesis of the isolated city for it has afforded a flood of wealth through trade as well as literal frequent flooding. Built on an extraordinary forest of larch piles, the city gleams with ornate, marble-faced edifices. Venice is slowly sinking in the lagoon, not from the weight of the tourists who outnumber their 55,000 hosts by a multiple of 100, but because the aquifers have been nearly emptied, not to mention the impact of climate change. How this city still has utilities is a wonder in of itself? Mostly formatted from straight-sided covers, as they fit squarely within their stone pavers, this set features four designs from the world’s most remarkable testament to human ingenuity. Tombino replicates manhole covers from around the world into functional art in the form of coasters, trivets and magnets. Each illustration is initially hand-drawn for precision and then permanently etched into cork. These make the perfect birthday or holiday gift. Each coaster is .25" thick and 4" in diameter. The engraving method has incredible detail and tactility. Fabricated from sustainable Portuguese cork. Designed and packaged in Philadelphia, PA USA.
Cork is a natural material, thus rare aberrations within the etching can occur, but at this scale good luck noticing.
As each one is made to order please allow three business days for delivery.

“We all have three cities: the one in which we grew up, the one where we live and the one in which we wished we live."-Alan Furst

A custom display rack can be ordered too. See the individual trivets and magnets as well.
