The main Isle of the Five Boroughs, Manhattan was “bought” from the local Lenape in 1626. The Lenape presumably saw this as a gift exchange as a diplomatic gesture by the Dutch settling at the southern swampy tip. Eventually, a manifest destiny mindset looked to the black granite-covered north and with British involvement a few decades later the isle switched from New Amsterdam to New York and the previous inhabitants were relegated elsewhere. This cover on the other hand, is everywhere in Manhattan. Designed in a radial fashion, sometimes with vent holes as depicted here, the overall aesthetic is reminiscent of a ship wheel. The island name and an adjusted location lie within the spokes. A nautical theme is logical given that it was Manhattan’s two surrounding rivers, The Hudson and the East, that made it such a lucrative outpost.
