The Philadelphia Gas Works came into being in 1835. Less than a year later 2nd street was illuminated by gas lanterns. Some of the street is still lit this way. 60 years later the city transferred operations to a private entity, but PGW became city-owned in 1973. Efforts have been made to cash in on this utility, but fortunately, City Council has elected to keep operations under their aegis thereby keeping costs affordable. Philadelphia is the largest poor city in America. Hence, finding the funding to maintain the over 1000 miles of piping has been challenging especially as the city turns toward more green energy supplies. While not green, this cover is made of a sustainable material, cast iron. Thus, it lasts for decades as made evident here given the older logo design. That logo sits in a field of standard diamond hatching with pickpoints at 4 & 10 O’clock. An added nod to the current logo hovers over the “W.”

The perfect gift for housewarmings, and anniversaries each illustration is initially hand-drawn for precision and then permanently etched into cork. The trivets are .375" thick and 7.25" in diameter with rounded edges. The engraving method has incredible detail and tactility. Fabricated from sustainable Portuguese cork. Designed and packaged in Philadelphia, PA USA.
Cork is a natural material, thus rare aberrations within the etching can occur.
As each one is made to order please allow three business days for delivery.
