Manhole Cover Cork Trivet-QUEBEC

$25.00

The capital of the nation within a nation, Quebec City was founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain who chose the Ojibwe word for where the St. Lawrence Seaway narrows. His ship appears heading toward New France on this cover, with full sails over the word for stormwater. The city motto “je me souviens,” or “I remember,” had a unique demonstration in 1943 during the war conference with Roosevelt, Churchill & King. The secret dossier of the meeting was left on the table and Sgt. Maj. Émile Couture of the Canadian Army scooped it up as a souvenir. That evening he realized the nature of the contents and hid in his spare tire well on the way to return it the next morning. He was questioned at length but eventually was rewarded for his discretion. And who could resist such a keepsake? Learn more about this event and more at the Canadian Museum of History.
