Manhole Cover Cork Trivet-St. Augustine

$25.00

America’s oldest continuously inhabited town, St. Augustine, Florida was founded by the Spanish in 1565. The coast of Florida was glimpsed by the crew of Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés on Sant Augustin’s feast day. He eventually became governor of the land where it remained in Spanish hands for over two centuries, then briefly to the Brits and then back to the Spaniards until 1819. Since then the town slowly became a tourist destination due to its location and Spanish heritage. St. Augustine notoriously made it in the National Eye during the Civil Rights era where its rampant racism marred the town as a vacation destination. Since then it has purged much of that history to become more attractive to people other than Freedom Riders. The history of this European-inspired US Foundry Storm cover is centered on its Spanish origins as delineated by its coat of arms. A crown of ramparts hovers over a shield containing four elements: a Fleur-de-Lis from the Bourbon era, a Castilian Castle, a shining sword and gauntlet of the garrison, and a Lion representing the once mighty kingdom of Leon. Tiny cruciforms are arrayed around the coat of arms with pickpoints at the east and west quadrants. Text ring the cover insert defining location, date of establishment, foundry and manufacturing origin, and a lone cigarette butt. Find it on Spanish Street, claro.
