The former capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia, still suffers from the specter of that notorious history. Incorporated in 1742, the city became the capital in 1780 and was crucial to both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars given its industry and transportation nexus. Its famed Monument Avenue was lined with statues dedicated to the men of the Confederacy and has only recently reconciled with the impact of having figures who “took bravery to fight for slavery,” to quote Harry Shearer. This cover from Capitol Foundry Incorporated can be found on that very esplanade. It features a grid much like the city itself with an esplanade-like subtraction in the center for the word “Sewer.” The city name and state occupy the north and south quadrants and the foundry name along with where the cover was cast are found in the west and east quadrants, respectively. Pickpoints replace parts of the grid at the northeast and southwest portions. One block has a familiarly shaped chewing tobacco splat.
