Manhole Cover Cork Trivet-Toledo, Ohio

$25.00

Toledo, Ohio, not the Holy Toledo of Spain, was founded in 1833 in the black swamp where the Maumee river meets the southwestern portion of Lake Erie. After a skirmish between Michigan and Ohio, the city was refounded in 1837 and dutifully incorporated into Ohio, while Michigan got Federal money for statehood and the Upper Peninsula. Not a bad deal. The Erie canal and eventually the railroads put Toledo on the map. The 19th century turned Toledo into an industrial hub, particularly in glass manufacturing. So much so, the moniker The Glass City became transparently obvious given all of the glass companies present. Noted citizen Jamie Farr, star of MASH, helped to retain Toledo in the public’s eye with his incessant praise of the local baseball team the Mudhens. There’s even a park named after him; crossdressers welcome. The Mudhens even have their own manhole cover designs outside their downtown stadium. Nearby is this cover from Toledo Edison which riffs on the Edison paradigm pattern. Here the state of Ohio, which fought over the city, lies at its core. Part of the Ohio manhole coaster set.

The perfect gift for housewarmings, and anniversaries each illustration is initially hand-drawn for precision and then permanently etched into cork. The trivets are .375" thick and 7.25" in diameter with rounded edges. The engraving method has incredible detail and tactility. Fabricated from sustainable Portuguese cork. Designed and packaged in Philadelphia, PA USA.
Cork is a natural material, thus rare aberrations within the etching can occur.
